China rPET Prices Hold Steady Despite vPET Volatility: Sources
Chinaβs recycled polyethylene terephthalate or rPET bale and flake prices have stayed unchanged for a third consecutive week, with market sources reporting a relatively calm market despite continued volatility in virgin PET or vPET prices.
According to OPIS data, prices for bales with labels were assessed at $545-$575 per metric ton, while bales without labels were heard at $680-$715/mt, unchanged from the previous week. Premium-grade rPET flake prices also remained stable at $920-$980/mt.
Market sources said trading activity remained largely steady, with downstream converters continuing to procure both vPET and rPET based on immediate production requirements rather than building inventories.
βThe price of vPET fluctuates greatly, while the rPET market seems relatively calm here,β a China-based seller said.
Downstream customers continue to make necessary purchases for virgin and recycled resin, helping to keep trading activity stable despite broader market uncertainty.
Market sources also noted that rising freight rates have made Chinese rPET less competitive in export markets, prompting some international buyers to postpone shipments indefinitely until logistics costs become more favorable.
While export activity has slowed, domestic inquiries and sales have increased, partially offsetting weaker overseas demand as Chinese converts continue to procure materials for immediate production needs.
βI donβt see much change for rPET prices in China this week. They are still in a similar range as last week,β the seller said.
Market sources expect Chinaβs rPET market to remain broadly stable in the near term, supported by steady domestic demand. However, export activity remains subdued as elevated freight costs continue to discourage overseas purchases.
