Soaps and Detergents & the Inorganics Supply Chain

The soap and detergent demand segment plays a key role in several inorganic commodity markets, such as caustic soda, sodium carbonate (soda ash), hydrogen peroxide, and sodium sulfate. Soaps are alkali salts of fatty acids with small amounts of other ingredients added. Detergents are a more complicated mixture of substances, all chosen to impart a particular action in cleaning. Detergents contain i) surface-active agents, which lowers the surface tension of water to wash materials more easily, ii) bleaching agents, like sodium perborate and percarbonate, iii) enzymes to remove stains, iv) softeners and pH control agents like soda ash, and v) bulking agents (fillers) like sodium sulfate.

Caustic soda provides critical alkalinity, acting as a powerful neutralizing agent, ensuring the final product maintains a precise pH balance. Soda ash acts as a pH buffer, water softener and a carrier for surfactants and bleaching agents. Soda ash helps to remove hardness from water by neutralizing calcium and magnesium ions.

Traditional powder detergents use sodium sulfate as a filler to dilute active ingredients in formulations. Use of sodium sulfate in powder detergents is gradually declining as formulations have become more concentrated. Demand for powder detergents is on a declining trend in some markets like North America and West Europe as consumer preferences shift toward compact or liquid detergents that do not use sodium sulfate. Meanwhile, demand for powder detergents is growing in other markets like South America and India.

Hydrogen peroxide, soda ash and chlor-alkali derivatives perform interconnected roles in household and institutional cleaning products. One of the clearest links between these chemical markets is sodium percarbonate, an oxygen-based bleaching agent produced by combining hydrogen peroxide with sodium carbonate, or soda ash. When dissolved in water, sodium percarbonate releases hydrogen peroxide and sodium carbonate. The hydrogen peroxide provides oxidative bleaching and stain-removal performance, while the sodium carbonate increases alkalinity and supports the removal of soils and water hardness.

The detergent industry continues to be one of continued innovation driven growth, designing environmentally-friendly products, which use smaller packaging and less overall waste. Formulations effective for cold water are also some of the innovations, as well as new presentations like detergent pods and detergent sheets in some markets. Global companies in this space have recently reported the challenging operating environment experienced since last year, with added geopolitical disruptions to commodity markets in Q2-2026 which have impacted them with higher raw material, energy and transportation costs. Looking forward, we can expect that soaps and detergents will remain a relevant demand driver for inorganic chemicals such as caustic soda, soda ash, sodium sulfate and hydrogen peroxide.
