CBAM Stress Test

Quickly quantify your 2026–27 CBAM exposure, compare EU default values with verified emissions, and see where margin pressure will bite first.

Why CBAM Duties From 2027 Make 2026 Your Critical Year

From 2027, CBAM duties on EU imports of iron, steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, hydrogen and more will be calculated on the basis of your 2026 trade flows. If you don’t have verified emissions data in place, your bill will default to European Commission values that are often higher than actual plant performance, creating unnecessary cost and margin risk.

  • Default values by default: No verified emissions β†’ you pay on EC default factors.
  • Hidden margin squeeze: CBAM interacts with EU ETS and power prices, reshaping netbacks and competitiveness across routes, grades and suppliers.
  • Fragmented view: Internal spreadsheets rarely join up duties, carbon prices and trade strategy in one place.

The OPIS Steel CBAM Calculator: See Your CBAM Bill Before It Arrives

  • Developed by our McCloskey steel team and powered by OPIS carbon market data, turn CBAM’s complexity into clear duty estimates you can act on today.
  • Estimate potential CBAM duties on priority lanes and suppliers using EU default values or your own emissions data. Understand your potential CBAM bill on priority trade flows in minutes, not months.
  • Compare default vs verified emissions to quantify the value of improving your data and reporting strategy. Replace EC default factors with your own data to avoid overpaying on carbon.
  • Spot high-risk flows at a glance, so you know where CBAM could hit margins hardest and where to focus negotiations first.
  • The OPIS Carbon Suite turns one-off duty estimates into a forward-looking carbon cost strategy.

What You Get in a CBAM Stress Test Session

The CBAM Stress Test is a focused 30–45 minute session where we run your real trade flows through the CBAM Defaults Calculator and overlay OPIS carbon scenarios to show how costs evolve – not just in 2026, but over the coming decade.

3-step breakdown:

  1. Map your exposure
You share one or two priority flows (e.g., origin, route, volume, product, emissions data if available). We quantify indicative CBAM duties under EU default values and, where possible, under your own data.
  2. Overlay carbon price paths
Using CAMIRO within the OPIS Carbon Suite, we layer in short- and long-term EU ETS/CBAM price scenarios to show how duties and margins move over time.
  3. Identify practical levers
Together, we highlight concrete options: emissions data strategy, sourcing shifts, contract design and risk management tactics to reduce CBAM-driven cost and volatility.

Sessions are tailored, confidential and reserved for a limited number of organizations with material EU-facing exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • EU steel and metals importers and distributors with significant 2026 flows into the EU.
  • Non‑EU producers and exporters selling into CBAM-covered value chains.
  • Trading houses, banks and commodity financiers backing CBAM-exposed trade.
  • Strategy, risk, sustainability and regulatory teams responsible for CBAM planning, reporting and board-level updates.

The Stress Test focuses on a guided session using our CBAM Defaults Calculator on a small number of your real flows. Direct self-serve access to the calculator is available via a separate trial or subscription; you can request a trial on the same form.
At minimum, we recommend sharing origin, destination, product, annual volume and supplier for 1–3 representative trade lanes. If you have verified emissions data, we can compare that against EU default values to quantify potential savings.
The current Stress Test is geared to steel and steel-related flows, where CBAM exposure is most immediate and the steel calculator is already live. As additional CBAM sector calculators are rolled out, we will extend the Stress Test format to those products as well.
Sessions are led by OPIS / McCloskey carbon and steel specialists who work daily on CBAM, EU ETS and carbon market outlooks, supported by our Carbon Suite analytics team.
